What to Expect When Moving into a Retirement Community
July 7, 2022Did you know that the VA offers a benefit to help pay for assisted living? This pension benefit, VA Aid and Attendance, covers several services that active-duty veterans or their spouses may find valuable in financially supporting senior care services.
What is VA Aid & Attendance?
VA Aid and Attendance is a pension benefit offered by the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) to veterans and their surviving spouses who require assistance with daily living activities. This benefit can be used to pay for assisted living services, such as those provided here at John Wesley Villas, adult day care centers, or at home.
Who qualifies for this benefit?
To qualify for VA Aid and Attendance, veterans must have served at least 90 days of active duty, with at least one day during a period of war. They must also be considered to have identified social or medical needs, as determined by the VA. This can include issues such as physical or cognitive impairment, blindness, or the need for regular assistance with activities of daily living.
Surviving spouses of veterans who meet these qualifications may also be eligible for VA Aid and Attendance. They must be unmarried, have not remarried, and have identified social or medical needs.
What is the benefit amount?
The amount of benefit provided through VA Aid and Attendance can vary depending on the individual’s circumstances. It is calculated based on factors such as the veteran’s income, assets, and the cost of the assisted living services being received. Generally, the benefit can be used to help cover the cost of room and board, as well as any additional care or services needed.
How to apply
To apply for VA Aid and Attendance, veterans and their surviving spouses must complete an application and provide documentation such as discharge papers, medical records, and financial information. The application process can be complex, and it may be helpful to work with a VA-accredited attorney or agent who can assist with the paperwork and ensure that all required documents are submitted.
It’s important to note that VA Aid and Attendance is a needs-based benefit, and it is not guaranteed that every veteran who applies will be approved. However, for those who are eligible, it can provide much-needed financial assistance for assisted living services.
