Wondering what to expect when moving into a retirement community? Here at John-Wesley Villas, we understand the concerns and questions that can come when moving into a new home. Moving to a retirement community involves a lot of change that can often be difficult or confusing to navigate. That’s why we have put together this helpful guide for what to expect in your first week of moving into our retirement community.
Seven Days to Successful Living
Before moving in
Before your scheduled move-in, we have already begun preparing for your arrival. First and foremost, we make sure that your apartment is ready for you to move in. That means that all the updates are completed, the walls may have been painted, and all appliances are in working order. The apartment is cleaned and ready for you!
We also work to make sure all necessary paperwork is filled out and completed before your scheduled move-in. This includes the application, lease agreement, and any paperwork required from your physician. If you are using a moving company, we will coordinate with them to ensure that your move-in process is seamless. If there are any issues, our lifestyle counselor will work with you so that your move-in is as stress-free as possible.
Day 1: Moving day
On the day of your move, most of the hard work has already been taken care of. Members of our staff will come by to meet you and welcome you to the community. Staff members will provide you with a handbook full of helpful information, including important phone numbers, transportation schedules, and mail. You will also be provided with our monthly activities calendar, so you know what activities are taking place and where.
Day 2: Welcome!
You should have received a welcome gift basket from the community. Each gift basket is individually tailored to each new resident to welcome you to our beautiful community. Our staff will come by to check on you and see if there is anything you may need. We will let you know which day housekeeping will be coming by to schedule your regular apartment cleaning. A menu will be provided and the process for placing your order will be reviewed. We will also tell you how to request maintenance for any concerns or things that need to be fixed or replaced. Our staff will also give your family a call to let them know how you are doing and answer any of their questions as well.
Day 3: Getting settled in
Now that you’ve had a couple of days to settle in, we’d like you to become more familiar with your new home. One of the best benefits of living in a retirement community is that the whole community is your home. That means all common areas, outdoor pavilions and gardens, libraries, and lounges are all yours to enjoy at your leisure. You will tour our salon and meet our stylist, who will give you a list of all available services. While you may have been on a tour or two before your move, a staff member will happily give you an additional tour to help you become more acquainted with your new home and neighbors.
Entertainment is a large part of what we do in retirement communities. Our activities director and staff will meet with you and see what activities pique your interest. If you have any particular requests for an activity or game, please let our activities staff know so they can get that activity on the schedule.
Days 4 – 7
For the remainder of the week, our staff will work to get to know you and your interests. Our activities programs are a great way for residents to meet their new neighbors and discover new hobbies with their peers. Our chef will personally meet with each resident to discover their taste preferences and ensure that they are enjoying their meals. Our maintenance and landscaping staff have been with our community for many years and are ready to assist residents with anything they may need in their apartments and around the community.
Moving into a new community can be stressful, but our 7 Days to Successful Living is designed to make the move-in as smooth as possible. Each person on our staff is here to ensure that you are comfortable and welcome in your new home and help you with anything you may need the first week and every day after.
