The apartment should be spacious enough to accommodate the senior and his or her needs, while also offer the comforts of home. Is the apartment size adequate? What is the proximity to the dining room? Are the restroom accommodations sufficient? Is there an elevator close by? Are pets allowed?

Dining Options

Dining is a central part of retirement communities, and the cuisine served should be fresh and healthy. Are there a variety of options available? Are meals included in the monthly cost? Is room service offered, and is it complimentary? Can they accommodate any special diets necessary?

Activities and Entertainment

Communities often go to great lengths to provide activities and events for residents and their guests. Does the community have an Activities Director? What types of activities are offered weekly? Is there a gym? Are there frequent events or excursions? Are there any activities you would like to see?

Care Staff

The staff at the community are people you will see frequently, so it’s important to be comfortable with the community employees. Did you meet the Executive Director? Are there employees on site 24 hours per day? Is there a nurse on staff? Was the staff knowledgeable and friendly? Pay attention to how the staff treats other residents and employees, as their demeanor can say a lot about life at the community.

COVID-19 Preparedness

Seniors and the elderly face an increased risk from the symptoms of COVID-19. It’s important to know what measures the community has in place to prevent the spread of the virus. What are the community’s policies to combat COVID-19? Are face masks and hand sanitizer readily available? Have the staff been vaccinated? Have there been any outbreaks in the community? Are guests or residents screened for symptoms upon arrival?
